Impact in Focus – KCC:
Care, Education, and Belonging for Every Child

As we advance our 2025 #OneTeam for Kenya campaign, we remain focused on what truly matters: the lives and communities transformed through our collective efforts. Each contribution supports stories of courage, healing, and the extraordinary outcomes that emerge when quality healthcare and inclusive education work hand in hand. When you participate in our campaign or join an Impact Journey to Kenya, these are the transformations you’re making possible.
Among our trusted partners in Kenya is Kajiado Children’s Centre (KCC), an organization that embodies our belief that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive, regardless of physical challenges or circumstances. Their work sits at the heart of two of our core focus areas: access to healthcare and access to education. As the only facility in Kajiado County offering comprehensive pediatric physiotherapy services, KCC is rewriting what’s possible for children with orthopedic and neurological conditions—proving that with the right care and support, every child can step boldly into their future.
The stories that follow put a human face on KCC’s vital work and demonstrate how breaking down barriers to healthcare and education creates ripple effects that transform entire families and communities.
Unbreakable Spirit: Stephen’s Journey from Rejection to Recognition
Sixteen-year-old Stephen Maingi was born with brittle bones disease, making his bones so fragile that minor movements could cause painful fractures. His childhood was marked by surgeries and recoveries, watching other children play while he remained on the sidelines. When his father learned of Stephen’s disability, he left, making Stephen’s mother both parent and provider.
Despite these challenges, Stephen’s spirit remained strong. He excelled in mathematics and Kiswahili, loved helping classmates, and had dreams of becoming a teacher—but he needed the tools to pursue them.
Everything changed when Stephen was referred to KCC following corrective surgery. The Centre provided post-operative care, physiotherapy, and a specialized wheelchair that gave him independence. For the first time, he could move freely and attend school.
Stephen completed primary school with excellent marks but faced rejection from three secondary schools—not because of his grades, but because they lacked accessibility infrastructure.
KCC advocated tirelessly and found a school willing to accept Stephen and improve accessibility for future students. Today, he’s thriving as a Grade 11 student, proving what happens when healthcare and education unite to empower a child.
Reclaiming Childhood: Naneu’s Path from Paralysis to Possibility
Nine-year-old Naneu Lesiyio’s first four years were filled with joy in her small village. When a sudden illness brought severe convulsions that weakened one side of her body, she could no longer walk or play like other children. Despite visits to local dispensaries, her condition seemed hopeless.
At KCC, Naneu found comprehensive care addressing both her hemiplegia and epilepsy. Through personalized physiotherapy and specialized tools crafted in the Centre’s workshop—a hand splint, auxiliary crutch, and ankle-foot orthotic—she began her journey back to mobility.
Today, Naneu walks with minimal support and has joined the classroom, learning and making friends. Her seizures have decreased dramatically. “I never thought I’d see this day,” her mother says. “She’s becoming herself again.”
Breaking Through Barriers: Kibet’s Triumph Over Complex Challenges
When Kibet first arrived at KCC, he couldn’t speak, crawl, or communicate like other children his age. His parents had traveled hundreds of kilometers from rural Baringo County after years of unanswered questions about their son’s hyperactivity, impaired speech, and frequent convulsions.
KCC’s team created a personalized rehabilitation plan including sensory integration therapy, medication, and structured play sessions to stimulate development. Progress was slow initially, but milestones began emerging.
Kibet learned to respond to prompts, crawl, sit, and eventually stand with support. His parents watched in awe as their once-isolated son began engaging with other children and making friends.
Today, Kibet thrives at the Child Care Educational Centre, participating in class activities while continuing therapy. “We never imagined this was possible,” his parents say. “Now, he has a future.”
The Power of Comprehensive Care
These three stories illustrate a profound truth: when healthcare and education intersect with dignity and purpose, extraordinary transformations become possible. Stephen’s academic excellence challenges assumptions about disability. Naneu’s restored mobility creates new possibilities. Kibet’s breakthrough proves that with proper support, even complex challenges can be overcome.
As the only facility in Kajiado County offering comprehensive orthopedic services, KCC serves families across the region. Their holistic model restores childhoods, builds family resilience, and creates foundations for lifelong independence.
This is the power of strategic partnership—a core principle of the Richer Life Foundation’s approach to lasting change. Through our #OneTeam for Kenya campaign, we’re investing in a future where children like Stephen, Naneu, and Kibet can transform their communities and prove that disability is not inability.
We’re grateful to our partners at KCC for ensuring no child is left behind. Whether you support through our Impact Fund or experience this transformation on an Impact Journey to Kenya, you join a movement believing every child deserves the chance to grow strong, speak freely, and walk boldly into their tomorrow.
