Walking toward justice: Reflections from our recent Impact Journey to Alabama
Itinerary
Meet Dr. Valda Harris Montgomery, neighbor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who will share personal memories of her family’s friendship with the Kings during the Montgomery Bus Boycott era. Her firsthand accounts bring this pivotal historical moment to life in ways history books cannot.
In the afternoon, we’ll visit the newly created Freedom Monument Sculpture Park, a 17-acre memorial along the Alabama River honoring the 10 million Black people enslaved in America. This contemporary memorial connects historical injustice to present-day remembrance and healing.
Travel to Selma with guide Jake Williams, stopping at significant sites including the Viola Liuzzo Monument, commemorating a white civil rights activist murdered by Klan members during the Selma to Montgomery marches.
The emotional pinnacle of our journey comes as we walk across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, following the exact path of the 1965 Voting Rights marchers who faced brutal violence on “Bloody Sunday.” This solemn experience connects us physically to one of America’s most consequential moments of moral courage.
Spend a deeply moving day at the Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice (informally known as the National Lynching Memorial). Created by the Equal Justice Initiative, these sites present a comprehensive narrative connecting slavery, lynching, segregation, and mass incarceration through immersive exhibits and powerful memorials.
We’ll share lunch at the Equal Justice Initiative Pavilion, processing our experiences together and discussing how we can apply our insights to create meaningful action.
